The African champions, Ahly, dominated the game from the start, finishing the first half with a three-goal lead at 18-15.

The European champions did their best to make a comeback, but their efforts were thwarted by Ahly's in-form goalkeeper, Abdelrahman Taha.

In the semifinals, Ahly suffered a 28-24 defeat to SC Magdeburg of Germany, while Barcelona faced a 39-34 loss against Telekom Veszprem of Hungary in the same round.

The Cairo giants advanced to the last four as the best second-placed team in their respective groups.

They secured the second position in Group B with three points (+26), tied with Zamalek (-2) and Khaleej Club from Saudi Arabia (+16), but progressed due to their superior goal difference.

Barcelona, the European champions, had triumphed over Ahly 31-23 in their earlier group stage encounter this week.
