Handball: Hungary’s Veszprem claim IHF Club World Championship 2024 title in thrilling final

Hungary’s Telekom Veszprem secured victory over Germany’s SC Magdeburg with a 34-33 win in the final match of the 17th IHF Men's Club World Championship 2024, claiming the championship title in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital on Thursday.

Telekom Veszprem needed to go into overtime after the full-time period ended in a 28-28 draw between the two teams.

At halftime, SC Magdeburg held a narrow 14-13 lead over the eventual champions, Telekom Veszprem.

Veszprem showcased their strength throughout the championship, defeating Barcelona 39-34 in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Magdeburg faced off against bronze medalists Ahly of Egypt, losing 28-24 in the semifinals held on Tuesday.

The 2024 IHF Men’s Club World Championship marks the 17th edition of this annual handball tournament, running from September 27 to October 3 in Egypt's New Administrative Capital under the governance of the International Handball Federation (IHF).

With nine teams divided into three groups of three, the group winners and the best second-placed team advanced to the semifinals.

Earlier on Thursday, Egypt’s Ahly secured the bronze medal by defeating Barcelona 32-29 in a competitive match at the prestigious tournament.
