Official Lebanese media reported Israeli strikes on south Beirut Sunday shortly after Israel's army issued orders for residents to leave the densely-populated suburbs -- repeatedly bombarded for several days.

"Enemy warplanes launched two strikes on the southern suburbs, the first targeted the Saint Therese area, and the second targeted the Burj al-Barajneh area," Lebanon's National News Agency said.

An AFP correspondent said her windows shook after one of the strikes and another heard loud explosions.

AFP live video footage captured three strikes, one of them triggering a big explosion with flaming flares shooting out as thick black smoke billowed.

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, the southern suburbs were hit by more than 30 strikes, the NNA said, in one of the most intense barrages yet.

Israel has frequently cited Hezbollah's presence in south Beirut as a pretext for carpet bombing the densely populated area.

Lebanon's health ministry on Sunday said 25 people had been killed and 96 injured in Israeli strikes the day before, revising an earlier toll.

"The total death toll yesterday rose to 25 killed and 96 wounded following the Israeli enemy's strikes," the health ministry said in a statement, up from 23 earlier in the day.

Since September 23, Israel has intensified its bombardment of Lebanon, killing more than 1,110 people and forcing over one million to flee their homes, according to official figures.
