Algeria reach Nations Cup, Zimbabwe on the verge

Algeria clinched a spot in the Nations Cup by defeating Togo 1-0 away in the qualifiers on Monday.

Borussia Dortmund defender Ramy Bensebaini scored the lone goal from the penalty spot in the 18th minute.

Leading Group E with maximum 12 points, Algeria are the only team in the qualifiers to win all four of their games so far.

In another match in the group, Liberia missed an opportunity to improve their standing after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Equatorial Guinea.

This result leaves Liberia in third place in the group with two points, level with Togo at the bottom.

Equatorial Guinea sit in second place with five points.

Champions in 2019, Algeria were eliminatated from the first round in the past two editions of the AFCON. 

In Group J, Walter Musona netted twice while Prince Dube added a third goal as Zimbabwe secured a 3-1 victory over Namibia at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.

This win propelled Zimbabwe to second place in the group with eight points, trailing leaders Cameroon by two points.

Zimbabwe only need three points from their remaining two games in the qualifiers to secure their spot in the continental competition.

They are set to host Kenya on 11 November before visiting Cameroon, who have already qualified, four days later.

The top two teams from the various groups in the Nations Cup qualifiers will progress to the continental competition.
