Egypt, Saudi Arabia affirm commitment to coordinating efforts for regional, int'l peace

Egypt and Saudi Arabia affirmed Wednesday their commitment to coordinating and intensifying joint efforts toward maintaining regional and international security and peace.

This announcement came in a joint statement following Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman's recent visit to Egypt on Tuesday and meeting with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

The statement touched on pressing regional issues, particularly the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the significant civilian casualties due to the brutal Israeli aggression.

Both countries stressed the urgent need to reach a sustainable truce and permanent ceasefire, lift the siege on the strip, and protect civilians per international law and international humanitarian law.

Both sides also expressed concerns over the Israeli escalation in Lebanon, reiterating their dedication to maintaining the country’s security, stability, unity, and territorial integrity.

Moreover, they discussed the Yemeni crisis and pledged full support for the Presidential Leadership Council, emphasizing the importance of supporting the United Nations' efforts towards reaching a comprehensive political solution to the ongoing conflict. 

The statement also stressed the need to preserve security and stability in the Red Sea, highlighting the necessity to mitigate risks in this vital maritime corridor, which could threaten regional and international security and global trade.

Furthermore, they underlined the importance of continued dialogue between conflicting parties in Sudan to reach a complete ceasefire, end the crisis, and maintain the country's unity and sovereignty.

Both nations affirmed their support for a Libyan-led solution, the UN-sponsored roadmap, and efforts of the UN envoys to reach a political solution that meets the aspirations of the Libyans.

They also agreed on the importance of international community support for Somalia in combating terrorism, with the Saudi crown prince welcoming Egypt’s ongoing efforts to foster Somalia's stability, unity, and territorial integrity.

The statement also underscored the strong economic relations between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The Saudi crown prince praised the economic reforms initiated by the Egyptian government.

He further affirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting Egypt through international financial institutions, emphasizing the importance of diversifying and enhancing the economic and investment cooperation between both nations.

According to the statement, the Egyptian president also praised Saudi Arabia’s role in stabilizing global oil markets, affirming the necessity of improving energy efficiency and rationalizing energy consumption across various sectors.

Additionally, El-Sisi lauded the Saudi efforts in combating climate change, while the Saudi crown prince praised Egypt's hosting of the UN Climate Conference (COP27) in November 2022.

Both leaders also reiterated their commitment to enhancing coordination in defence and security issues, commending the existing levels of cooperation while expressing a desire to deepen it.

The statement shed light on the importance of enhancing cooperation in combating extremism, hate speech, and terrorism and advocating for a culture of tolerance consistent with Islamic and Arab values.

In addition, they highlighted the importance of supporting global initiatives that confront current and future pandemics and working with international organizations amid global health challenges.

Ahead of the upcoming Hajj season, the Egyptian president expressed gratitude for Saudi Arabia's efforts to ensure the comfort of pilgrims and visitors.

The meeting between the two leaders witnessed the signing of several agreements and a shared commitment to bolstering economic, security, and diplomatic cooperation between their nations.
