Ethiopia have intensified their efforts to host the 2029 African Cup of Nations tournament, as confirmed in a statement released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday.

The bid was formally presented during CAF’s general assembly in Addis Ababa, underscoring Ethiopia's preparedness and dedication to upgrading their sports infrastructure.

"Ethiopia, a founding member of CAF, has always shown great enthusiasm for football. We deeply appreciate their hospitality and will thoughtfully consider their proposal to host the 2029 tournament," CAF president Patrice Motsepe.

While Morocco are slated to host AFCON 2025, the host for the 2027 edition remains undecided.

CAF address Nigeria’s mistreatment

During the general assembly in Addis Ababa, CAF president Motsepe strongly denounced the mistreatment of Nigeria's national football team.

The Super Eagles endured a distressing ordeal, stranded for over thirteen hours at Al Abraq Airport in Libya before a crucial AFCON 2025 qualifier, resulting in the postponement of the match between the two teams.

“CAF is actively tackling this issue,” affirmed Motsepe, highlighting the organization's unwavering commitment to fairness.

"While investigations are ongoing, I want to assure you that such disrespectful treatment towards visiting teams will not be tolerated," he emphasized.

The incident is currently under thorough investigation by the CAF Disciplinary Board, with consultations involving officials from both Libya and Nigeria.

In response, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has demanded to be awarded points for the suspended game against Libya in the AFCON qualifiers.

“We insist on being awarded the points for the game against Libya and call for sanctions against the host country to prevent such incidents in future matches,” stated the NFF in a released statement.

Nigeria currently leads Group D of the qualifiers with seven points, holding a one-point advantage over second-placed Benin.

Rwanda follows closely in third place with five points, while Libya trails the group with just one point.
