The current proposal involves establishing a relief-focused committee through a presidential decree by Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority.
Mahmoud Aloul, deputy chairman of Fatah's Central Committee, and Azzam Al-Ahmad and Rawhi Fattouh, two members of Fatah's Central Committee, represented the faction in the discussions in Cairo.
Khalil Al-Hayya, Hamas Political Bureau deputy chief for Arab and foreign affairs, and Husam Badran and Bassem Naim, two members of the Political Bureau, represented the faction at the talks.
The source added that Hamas had proposed during discussions forming a government of technocrats to circumvent any Israeli attempts to separate the Gaza Strip from the occupied West Bank.
Meanwhile, a high-level security source told Al-Qahera News TV channel that Fatah and Hamas have shown increased flexibility and optimism regarding forming the proposed committee.
The source added that this committee, which would be affiliated with the Palestinian Authority, is envisioned to include independent figures.
According to Al-Qahera News, both factions view Egypt’s efforts to form the committee to govern the Gaza Strip amid the challenges facing the Palestinian cause positively.
The source noted that Cairo meetings are addressing the broader goal of strengthening Palestinian unity, easing the suffering of the Palestinian people, and ensuring no separation of Gaza from the West Bank.
“Egypt is working tirelessly to reinitiate the halted negotiations, which has been at a standstill since July,” the source said.
Gaza Ceasefire
The source stressed that Egypt is actively communicating with both Palestinian and Israeli sides in efforts to secure a truce in Gaza and ensure the delivery of more humanitarian aid to the besieged strip.
He noted significant international support for the Egyptian peace efforts with both parties to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip Israeli obstructionism.
According to the source, Hamas was weary of piece-meal negotiations, fearing that Israeli hostilities would resume if the Israeli captives were released without guarantees.
Earlier Saturday, Izzat Al-Rishq, a member of Hamas' political bureau, said the group is dealing positively with any proposals that guarantee the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and halting its aggression on the strip.
“Netanyahu is stalling to gain time and is using negotiations as a cover to continue his aggression,” Al-Rishq said.
On Thursday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and CIA Chief William Burns discussed efforts to reach a truce in the Gaza war.
Last week, El-Sisi unveiled an Egyptian initiative for a two-day ceasefire in Gaza, in which four Israeli captives would be exchanged for several Palestinian prisoners, noting that the initiative would be a preliminary step towards a more prolonged ceasefire.
Egypt, along with the US and Qatar, has been mediating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire/prisoner swap deal to end the 13-month war in Gaza.
