The decree, published by the Official Gazette on Monday, outlines the restructuring of the NCW. The council now comprises 29 members instead of 27.
Judge Amal Ammar is a veteran member of the NCW and serves as the deputy rapporteur of the Legislative Committee within the council. She is also a presiding judge at the Qena Court of Appeals.
Ammar graduated with a law degree in 1992 and holds a master’s in international business law.
Her career includes roles as a member of the Administrative Prosecution Authority and as part of the Technical Office of the Minister of Justice, focusing on dispute resolution and child protection.
She was one of the first 30 female judges appointed to the Egyptian judiciary.
She was appointed as a judge with the rank of President of Court (Category B) at the South Cairo Primary Court.
Currently, she serves as the assistant minister of justice for human rights, women, and children’s affairs.
Amar is succeeding Maya Morsy who chaired the NCW from February 2016 till July 2024.
Morsy is currently the minister of social solidarity.
The National Council of Women was founded by a presidential decree in 2000 and was headed by former First Lady Suzanne Mubarak until her husband, Hosni Mubarak, was deposed in 2011.
