Bakr highlighted the region's commitment to sustainable development, in line with Egypt's Vision 2030, focusing on tourism, renewable energy, and infrastructure.
In London, the governor's visit coincided with the 2024 World Travel Market, one of the tourism industry's premier global events. He conducted discussions with potential investors about sustainable tourism and infrastructure projects in South Sinai, introducing opportunities for collaboration and investment.
During a meeting with representatives from Globeleq Africa, a prominent renewable energy firm, Bakr explored harnessing solar and wind energy to produce sustainable power solutions for Abu Zenima and Abu Rudeis in South Sinai. This initiative aligns with Egypt's renewable energy goals and promises economic growth through environmentally responsible practices.
In another significant meeting, Bakr outlined to Mark Hamilton, Director of the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce, plans to transform Nuweiba Port into a global logistics hub, enhancing trade and transport.
They also discussed investment opportunities in hospitality and retail development in Sharm El-Sheikh and Dahab, appealing to British investors interested in Egypt's expanding tourism market.
In a public address alongside Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy, Bakr introduced the "Great Transfiguration" project in Saint Catherine—a visionary initiative to establish the area as an international spiritual and cultural destination.
This project aims to honour the historic Saint Catherine's Monastery while offering a culturally enriching experience for visitors. Bakr invited global investors to support this project, emphasizing Egypt's tourism industry as an attractive, stable investment.
In Athens, Bakr continued his outreach by meeting with Archbishop Demetrios Damianios of Saint Catherine's Monastery. They focused on enhancing pilgrimage and religious tourism through the Great Transfiguration project.
He also met with Greece's Minister of Maritime Affairs, Ristos Stylianidis, to explore expanding maritime links between Egypt and Greece. This included exploring potential new shipping and transport routes to bolster regional trade and tourism connectivity, thus creating a solid maritime network supporting both nations' tourism and logistics sectors.
Further engagements with leading Greek tourism companies allowed Bakr to showcase South Sinai's diverse offerings, from Sharm El-Sheikh's beaches to Dahab's ecotourism experiences. He shared the governorate's plans to increase Greek tourism to South Sinai, emphasizing its blend of leisure, adventure, and cultural experiences.
