Christine Bishay, associate external relations officer at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Egypt, said that 546,746 Sudanese refugees are officially registered with the agency in Egypt.

Bishay added that Sudanese refugees now represent two-thirds of Egypt's registered refugee population of 827,644, which also includes individuals from 95 other countries, including Syria, South Sudan, and Eritrea.

She noted that in the early stages of the conflict more than a year ago, thousands of Sudanese arrived daily in Egypt before the rate stabilised to a few hundred per day.

However, according to the UN, many others who fled Sudan have taken refuge in neighbouring countries like Chad, South Sudan, and Libya.

On Friday, the UNHCR said that Egypt has become the largest host country for Sudanese refugees fleeing the war in Sudan.

The UN agency noted that the magnitude of the Sudanese humanitarian crisis has placed immense pressure on Egypt's resources and infrastructure.

Since April 2023, the war in Sudan has killed thousands of people and displaced over 11 million, with more than three million of them seeking shelter in neighbouring countries, according to the UN.
