Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty with his Somali counterpart Ahmed Moalem Faki in Riyadh
FM Abdelatty made his remarks during a meeting on Sunday evening with his Somali counterpart Ahmed Moalem Faki in Riyadh on the sidelines of the Extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit.
According to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the Somali federal government’s efforts to combat terrorism and uphold the state’s sovereignty over its entire territory.
During the meeting, Abdelatty expressed Cairo’s commitment to continue coordinating with his Somali counterpart to follow up on the pledge made by the leaders of Egypt and Eritrea in early October to provide comprehensive support to Somalia.
In a joint statement following a trilateral summit in Asmara, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki confirmed their support for strengthening Somalia’s army to combat terrorism, secure its borders, and protect its territorial integrity.
In Monday's meeting, Abdelatty reiterated Cairo’s commitment to enhancing peace and security in the Horn of Africa, a priority for Egyptian diplomacy and national security.
Furthermore, he stressed that Egypt’s contribution to the new peacekeeping mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) aligns with the country’s commitment to regional peace and security under the United Nations Charter, the African Union’s Constitutive Act, and the Arab League Charter.
According to the statement, Abdelatty reiterated Cairo’s commitment to share its expertise in counterterrorism and combating extremism to boost Somalia’s security and military capabilities.
Earlier in August, Egypt and Somalia signed a military cooperation protocol during a meeting attended by the presidents of both nations.
For his part, the Somali foreign minister expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s unwavering support in helping his country combat terrorism, assert its sovereignty, and uphold its unity and territorial integrity.
Moroccan FM
On the sidelines of Riyadh's summit, the Egyptian foreign minister held multiple meetings with his Arab and African counterparts.
In a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, Abdelatty discussed several mutual concerns, including the Libyan crisis, the situation in Sudan, and broader developments in Africa, particularly in the Horn of Africa region.
Abdelatty outlined to Bourita Egypt’s continued efforts to halt the Israeli aggression on Gaza and Lebanon, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the secure and rapid delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
