The detention comes based on orders from Kafr El-Dawar district prosecution in Beheira governorate.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Administrative Prosecution Authority launched an investigation into alleged ethical breaches by Gynecologist Wessam Shuaib following a live video she posted on social media, which seemed to disclose confidential details about her patients.
The ongoing investigation follows a report from the Media and Monitoring Centre to the Women’s Affairs, Human Rights, and Disabilities Unit on Monday, which initiated an examination and referred the matter for immediate investigation.
The complaint alleges that she shared a video on social media in which she discussed several cases involving women and girls who visited her for medical examinations, constituting a violation of patient rights and medical ethics.
In the video that has sparked criticism, she remarked, “I found a customary marriage paper handwritten with a filthy pen, looking at the ID cards: the man was born in 2004, and the lady was born in 1990, meaning she's old enough to be his mother.”
In response to the allegations held against her, Shuaib defended herself, saying: “To those objecting to the video, you are saying that I exposed patient secrets and violated patient privacy. Legally, religiously, and according to the medical profession, which I have sworn to uphold, I did not reveal any patient’s secrets.”
“I didn’t mention any patient’s name, phone number, address, or identifying details. I was speaking in general,” she explained.
The Administrative Prosecution affirmed its commitment to upholding citizens' rights, particularly in medical services, and vowed to prosecute violators.
Meanwhile, to thoroughly investigate these allegations, the Administrative Prosecution formed a committee tasked with reviewing hospital records related to gynecology, examining files of newborns admitted to the hospital’s nurseries, and inspecting Dr Shuaib’s private clinic.
Deviating from professional ethics
In parallel, the General Doctors Syndicate also responded to the incident, releasing a statement on Monday indicating that it had received complaints against Dr. Shuaib. The statement accused her of using inappropriate language in the video, “constituting an assault on family values and principles within Egyptian society.”
The syndicate confirmed that the complaints were referred to the Professional Ethics Committee, stressing its condemnation of any individual acts that harm both the patient and the medical profession.
The syndicate emphasized that the Code of Professional Ethics requires doctors to be societal role models, upholding high principles, safeguarding citizens' rights, avoiding exploitation, and maintaining honesty and accuracy in all actions.
According to the Hippocratic Oath and the Code of Professional Ethics, doctors should uphold ethical conduct and preserve the dignity of the profession from anything that may tarnish it.
Accordingly, the syndicate affirmed that it takes decisive action against any proven violations by its members. Doctors proven to have breached established medical ethics or conduct standards will be promptly referred for investigation.
If a doctor is found guilty, the syndicate states that they might face penalties determined by the disciplinary board, including removal from the Doctors Syndicate registry, which would prevent them from practising medicine.
