This is on the occasion of celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great architect Ernesto Verrucci (1874-1945). In the mid-19th century, thousands of women from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region emigrated to Egypt, specifically to Alexandria, Port Said, Suez, and Cairo. They worked as governesses, wet nurses, nannies, cooks, and domestics in the homes of the wealthy foreign bourgeoisie who resided permanently in Egypt. These women, who came from Trieste, Gorizia, and the surrounding areas, found an important job opportunity that represented a chance for them to improve their lives and gain independence, even if they paid a high price for this form of freedom. Cammareri, born in Palermo (Italy) in 1960, graduated in Foreign Languages at the Orientale University of Naples and, after a few years, moved permanently to Egypt for family reasons. She has been studying the history of the Italian community in Egypt for some time.
