In March 2024, the Egyptian and Italian governments signed the agreement.
Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat explained that the agreement aims to implement practical action plans focused on the rights of challenged people.
It also aims to strengthen the Egyptian National Council for Persons with Disabilities’ capacity to support their integration into society, according to a statement issued by the planning ministry on Tuesday.
Under the agreement, a national media campaign and an international forum will be launched to raise public awareness of the negative impact of society's stigma toward people with disabilities.
The campaign and forum also seek to promote their inclusion and foster a culture of comprehensive development in disability affairs, the statement noted.
Egypt has made significant progress in advancing the rights of people with disabilities.
In 2021, Cairo launched the Differently-Abled Fund to support Egyptians with disabilities, a group that numbers around 11 million.
During the fifth edition of the annual Kaderoun Bekhtelaf (Differently-Abled) event in February 2024, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi allocated EGP 10 billion to the special needs people's fund.
