Zamalek coach urges respect over Michalak ahead of Black Bulls match

Zamalek coach José Gomes has called on Mohammed Al-Juhani, president of Saudi club Ohod, to stop commenting on Zamalek winger Konrad Michalak who has been struggling since joining the team last summer coming from the Saudi Pro League.

“He shouldn’t talk about my players; we’ve worked hard with Michalak and the whole team. Everyone should focus on their own team.”  Gomes said at a press conference.

Michalak, who joined Zamalek on loan from Ohod last summer, has faced criticism for failing to score or assist in five appearances totalling 195 minutes. His missed chance in Zamalek’s 1-0 loss to Masry drew backlash.

Ohod president Mohammed Al-Juhani defended Michalak on MBC Masr 2, and said he is not having enough time to demonstrate his qualities and support.

Zamalek will play Black Bulls on Wednesday in Cairo as they start their campaign to defend the Confederation Cup title.

Gomes described the Mozambican side as physically strong with quick wingers and a skillful striker, warning of their ability to score from set pieces.

With the match being played behind closed doors, Gomes expressed disappointment that fans won’t be present.

“It’s sad that they can’t attend, but we’ll play to win for them and start the tournament well,” he said.

The Portuguese coach stressed the importance of respecting all opponents, saying, “I treat every game as if we’re playing against the biggest teams in the world. The key is to stay focused.”

Gomes also confirmed his interest in signing Nigerian midfielder Ovie Ejaria in January.

“He’s a great player, and I’ve wanted to bring him in for a while,” he said.

On Zamalek’s recent struggles to score, Gomes said the issue is about creating chances rather than individual players.

“Even top strikers like Erling Haaland miss chances. It’s about building opportunities as a team,” he added.

Zamalek defender Hossam Abdel-Meguid said the team is ready to give its best. “We’ll follow the coach’s plan and aim for a perfect start,” he said. “Winning is part of Zamalek’s identity, and we’re focused on keeping the Confederation Cup title.”

Zamalek, placed in Group D, will face Al Masry, Nigeria’s Enyimba, and Mozambique’s Black Bulls.
