According to a statement by the foreign ministry on Friday, upon learning of the incident, Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty immediately instructed the Egyptian Consulate General in Milan to coordinate with Italian authorities.

The Egyptian Consulate General in Milan is overseeing the investigation process to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death, added the statement. Once the investigation concludes, a detailed report from the relevant authorities will be awaited.

The ministry, the statement continued, extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and his loved ones in this difficult time.

The incident occurred late on the night of 23 November when two young men of Tunisian and Egyptian origins, riding a motorcycle, failed to stop at a police checkpoint and were subsequently pursued by the Carabinieri, Italy’s national gendarmerie.

The chase culminated in a traffic accident on Ripamonti Street in the Corvetto district, Milan.

Rami El-Gamal, 19 years old, tragically lost his life in the crash, while his 22-year-old Tunisian companion sustained injuries and was hospitalized.

According to news reports, following the incident, protests and clashes reportedly broke out over three days between migrants, mostly Egyptians, and Italian police forces in the Corvetto district.

Recent reports indicate that Italy is home to the largest Egyptian community in Europe, with over 600,000 Egyptians. Milan hosts the largest concentration, followed by Rome and Turin.
