Egypt, US FMs discuss rapid developments in Syria and Gaza's potential ceasefire

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and US counterpart Antony Blinken discussed the latest developments in the Middle East during a phone call on Wednesday evening, focusing on the situation in Syria and efforts to secure a ceasefire in war-torn Gaza.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers addressed the rapid developments in the northern part of Syria and their impact on the region's security and stability.

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's stance on respecting Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. He also stressed Egypt's support for Syria's national institutions and prioritizing the protection of civilians.

During a Security Council meeting on Tuesday to address the sudden escalation of fighting in Syria, the United States called for de-escalation and the protection of civilians.

The US and Russia, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, accused each other of supporting terrorism.



Gaza ceasefire
 

Abdelatty stressed to Blinken the need for intensified regional and international efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire and ensure the unconditional, sustained delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

In addition, he reviewed the outcomes of Monday's Cairo Ministerial Conference to Enhance the Humanitarian Response in Gaza with his American counterpart.
