Egypt FM discusses Syria developments with Syrian, Turkish, Iranian, Emirati counterparts

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty held separate phone calls on Wednesday with his Syrian, Turkish, Iranian, and Emirati counterparts to discuss the rapid developments in northern Syria and their grave consequences on the region’s security and stability.

These communications are part of Egypt's rigorous efforts to follow up on Syria's developments with key regional and international players, read a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the calls, Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's unwavering support for the Syrian state, underscoring the importance of respecting Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, 

He also stressed the critical importance of safeguarding civilians.

Moreover, the top diplomat affirmed the need for regional and international efforts to halt the escalation, reduce tensions, and prevent the situation from worsening, which could threaten regional and global security and stability.

The statement added that he also reiterated Egypt's full rejection of any incitement of sectarian divisions or infringement on the sovereignty, unity, or territorial integrity of any state.

On Wednesday, the minister also exchanged views with his US and Russian counterparts on ways to de-escalate the situation in Syria.

On 27 November, a militant alliance led by the UNSC-designated terrorist group Hay'at Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) launched a surprise attack on the Syrian army in the northern province of Aleppo, capturing significant territories in northwestern Syria, including large swathes of Aleppo, the nation’s second-largest city.

The attack reignited a war that has long devastated the country.
