Ahly head coach Marcel Koller is confident that his team can break their winless streak in South Africa when they face Orlando Pirates in the second round of the CAF Champions League group stage on Saturday.

“It’s time to end that record and secure a win against Orlando, even though we know it will be a tough match,” Koller told reporters at a pre-match press conference on Friday.

The Egyptian champions, fresh from a 4-2 victory over Stade d’Abidjan in their opening group fixture, will face the South African side at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg. The hosts also started their campaign with a 2-1 win against CR Belouizdad in Algeria.

“Away matches are always difficult, unlike playing at home with the support of Ahly’s fans. I never consider settling for a draw — I always push the players to aim for victory. A draw is acceptable only if the opponent delivers an outstanding performance,” Koller said.

The Swiss coach confirmed that midfielder Emam Ashour is fully fit after recent training sessions and that all players are physically and technically ready for Saturday’s clash.

Koller also praised Orlando Pirates for their depth and quality. “They are a strong opponent with experienced players who possess remarkable skills. We understand the magnitude of their talent and are prepared for the challenge,” he said.

The match will take place in the afternoon’s heat. Still, Koller expressed confidence in his players’ ability to adapt. “Our players have the experience to handle such conditions. We have trained at the same time of day over the past two sessions to prepare,” he noted.

When asked about Orlando Pirates playing more matches this season, Koller suggested it could work to Ahly’s advantage. “The fact that they might be fatigued could benefit us, as we are more rested and fresher,” he said.

Despite injuries affecting some squad members, Koller dismissed concerns about his team’s form, saying: “It’s still early in the season, and I’m not worried about the team’s performance level.”
