The OPEC Fund for International Development, a multilateral development finance institution established in 1976, has granted Egypt a $40 million loan to construct two wind farms with a combined capacity of 1.1 GW in the Gulf of Suez, according to a release published on OPEC's official website on Tuesday.

This renewable energy project will provide clean power to over 1.3 million households and support Egypt’s goal of generating more than 40 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035.

The project has secured substantial financial backing, including $200 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and $170 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The total project cost is estimated at around $1.1 billion.

The construction of this project will commence in January 2025 and end in August 2027.

The project has received the Golden License from the Egyptian Cabinet, recognizing it as a strategic initiative for the country. This license offers various incentives, such as expedited approvals, to accelerate the project’s implementation and support Egypt’s renewable energy objectives.

The project involves the greenfield wind farm design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a capacity of 550 MW, divided into two sites.

Expected to generate 4,111 GWh annually, the wind farm will supply clean, reliable, and affordable energy to over one million households while reducing annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 1.71 million tons.

This project will significantly contribute to Egypt’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and support the country’s objective of achieving 42 percent renewable energy in its generation mix by 2030.
