The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat, and UAE Ambassador to Egypt Mariam Al-Kaabi.
Abydos 1 solar power plant is a 500-megawatt project implemented by UAE-based AMEA Power, part of Emirati Al Nowais Investment Group.
AMEA Power owns and operates the 500 MW solar PV power plant through its subsidy, Abydos Solar Power Company (ASPC).
No more load-shedding
In a speech during the event, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that the Egyptian government has allocated significant funding to stabilize the national power grid, ensuring that load-shedding practices will not return.
In addition, Madbouly noted that the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has successfully resolved issues of power outages, securing an improved quality and efficiency of electricity supply.
He stressed that the Ministry of Electricity and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources have developed a comprehensive plan to meet energy demands for the summer of 2025.
This includes investing $4 billion in renewable energy projects, in collaboration with the private sector, to bridge an anticipated gap of 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts. The projects are expected to operate by the upcoming summer.
For his part, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat said the $440 million plant is the result of fruitful cooperation between the public and private sectors and part of the Ministry of Electricity's ongoing efforts to implement Egypt's vision for leveraging renewable energy sources.
Esmat added that the plant will provide 5,000 direct job opportunities and 1,200 indirect ones. It will also contribute to powering 544,000 homes and reducing emissions by 782,300 tons annually.
More projects ahead
During the inauguration ceremony, Chairman of AMEA Power Hussain Al Nowais announced the start of the engineering work for the Abydos 2 Solar Power Plant with a production capacity of 1 gigawatt of clean electricity.
Al Nowais also emphasized the significant investments made by Emirati companies, including AMEA Power, in various economic sectors in Egypt.
He said that by the end of this year, the company will have invested over $2 billion in Egypt to generate approximately 3,000 megawatts of electricity through five major projects.
During the ceremony, Madbouly witnessed signing two agreements to establish a 500-megawatt wind power station in the Gulf of Suez in collaboration with AMEA Power.
The $600 million power station brings AMEA Power and the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, represented by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and the New and Renewable Energy Authority.
