The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, said the “Your Heart is Your Responsibility” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases and their prevention, has been successfully implemented in 401 primary healthcare units across 21 governorates in Egypt since 2023.

Your Heart is Your Responsibility

Abdel-Ghaffar explained that the campaign is part of the ministry's efforts to enhance primary healthcare services and promote the prevention of non-communicable diseases. The campaign's several phases include training medical teams, updating treatment guidelines, and providing necessary medical equipment.

Abdel-Ghaffar noted that the campaign has successfully trained targeted physicians to form training teams at the governorate level and that training is ongoing to cover the remaining governorates. The campaign's second phase, which focused on training medical teams at primary healthcare units, has successfully implemented updated guidelines for non-communicable diseases. The third phase involved distributing medical equipment to meet the needs of healthcare units.

For his part, Dr Nabil Farag, Professor of Cardiology at Ain Shams University and President of the Egyptian Society of Cardiology, highlighted that Egypt has high rates of heart disease among the young, unlike in Western countries where heart diseases are more common among the elderly. He pointed out that studies in Egypt indicate that heart diseases and coronary artery issues appear about ten years earlier than in Europe and the United States, leading to early mortality within the same timeframe.

Furthermore, Farag emphasized that early detection of heart diseases requires comprehensive screening for individuals with risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, or genetic predisposition. He recommended that these individuals undergo regular medical examinations to ensure they are not affected by heart diseases.

Farag also commended Egypt's recent health initiatives, such as "100 Million Health" and the Hepatitis C eradication campaign, describing them as the most impactful in the history of Egypt's healthcare system. He praised the "Your Heart is Your Responsibility" initiative for focusing on heart disease awareness and prevention, stressing the importance of collaboration between the Ministry of Health and pharmaceutical companies to increase awareness and preventive measures for the benefit of the Egyptian healthcare system.

Meanwhile, Dr Mohamed Galal, Vice President and Head of Consumer Health at Bayer Middle East, stated that the "Your Heart is Your Responsibility" initiative for the early detection of heart diseases reflects fruitful collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population to improve patient health. He noted that heart diseases remain the leading cause of death globally, including in Egypt. He confirmed that since 2023, the campaign has provided specialized support for early detection of heart diseases through advanced equipment and a comprehensive protocol designed to offer uninterrupted services to achieve its goals by building sustainable capabilities and employing the latest training methods.

Galal added that this initiative complements Bayer's role in supporting and developing Egypt's healthcare system. He referred to Bayer's previous plans to localize pharmaceutical production for sustainable development in Egypt, and he expressed his pride that this initiative has become part of the "100 Million Health" presidential initiative.

In addition, Galal highlighted that Bayer's global policy dedicates €100 million to support and improve the health of over 100 million individuals worldwide. He added that this policy aligns with the developments in Egypt's healthcare system in the past seven years. Moreover, Galal noted that the presidential initiatives have increasingly accentuated Egyptians' health and ensured access to the best treatments without discrimination in line with Egypt's Sustainable Development Goals and Vision 2030.
