Egypt supports legal migration pathways while addressing the root causes of illegal migration, read a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The statement said the country also focuses on domestic development so that migration could become a choice rather than a necessity. It works on empowering youth and building their capacities in accordance with labour markets both domestically and abroad.

Moreover, it underscored the importance of integrating migrants into host societies and adopting a positive narrative regarding their significant contributions to supporting development efforts in both host communities and their own countries.

According to the statement, comprehensively addressing migration issues requires more international cooperation, coordination, and participation. Relevant international organizations and countries of origin, transit, and destination should foster constructive dialogue.

Successful integration of refugees

Egypt is the second-largest recipient of refugees seeking safety from conflicts and remains at the centre of countries receiving new and traditional migratory flows, said Hanan Hamdan, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative to Egypt and the Arab League states.

In November, Egypt's parliament approved its first domestic bill to regulate the affairs of refugees and asylum seekers, aligning the country's policies with international agreements. It also established the Permanent Committee for Refugee Affairs to manage refugee-related matters.

Furthermore, Egypt hosts more than nine million migrants. Sudanese, Syrians, Yemenis, and Libyans constitute 80 percent of the refugees living in Egypt, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

According to the UNHCR, Egypt is the largest host country for Sudanese refugees, accounting for 1.2 million.

Syrian refugees are estimated at 1.5 million in Egypt, forming the second-largest foreign community in the country after Sudanese nationals.

Egypt is committed to providing essential services, including education and healthcare, to migrants, despite the significant pressures and financial burdens facing the country.
