"The scan revealed a partial tear in the lower portion of the anterior muscle on the outer side," said Ahmed Gaballah, Ahly's team doctor, as reported on the club's official website.
The 27-year-old will immediately commence a treatment regimen. Further medical evaluations are scheduled for next week to assess his recovery and determine the duration of his absence from the squad.
Earlier reports from Ahly TV had indicated that Taher was dealing with a knee bruise unrelated to the cruciate ligament, alleviating initial concerns of a more severe injury.
The injury comes as Ahly prepare to host Algeria's CR Belouizdad at Cairo Stadium on Sunday, 22 December, in the third round of the CAF Champions League. The match was originally scheduled for last week but was postponed due to the team’s participation in the Intercontinental Cup.
Ahly currently sit second in Group D with four points, one point ahead of third-placed CR Belouizdad.
