Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed on Sunday Egypt's active involvement in regional and international efforts aimed at achieving stability in Sudan, preserving its interests, and maintaining its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

FM Abdelatty made his remarks during a meeting with his Sudanese counterpart, Ali Youssef Al-Sharif, in Cairo.

Abdelatty emphasized to Al-Sharif Egypt's full support for Sudan and its keenness to stand by its brotherly nation in this critical circumstance.

Since April 2023, tens of thousands of Sudanese have been killed and 12 million uprooted due to the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The crisis created what the United Nations has called the world's largest displacement crisis.

Minister Abdelatty reviewed during his meeting with Al-Sharif Egypt's position calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities, a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry pointed out.

He also welcomed the decision made by the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) – Sudan’s highest governing authority established following the 2019 ousting of former President Omar Al-Bashir – to enable UN staff to establish centres for storing humanitarian aid.

The move will help accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid in Sudan, read the statement.

Sudan is grappling with one of the world's largest humanitarian crises, triggered by a brutal war between the two sides, leaving over 24.6 million people, about half the population, facing acute food insecurity.

Egypt’s top diplomat also stressed Egypt's keenness to resume Sudan's membership in the African Union and its support within regional and international multilateral frameworks as soon as possible.

Regarding Egypt’s efforts to support Sudanese students, Abdelatty pointed out that the Egyptian government has taken all necessary measures to prepare several Egyptian schools to facilitate the completion of exams for Sudanese students residing in Egypt.

Egypt has become the largest host country for Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported in November.

On water security, both sides emphasized the necessity of maintaining the pace of coordination and cooperation between the two nations to protect the water security of the two downstream countries, adhering to the principles of international law and fostering consensus within the Nile Basin.

The ministers also agreed on the importance of respecting Somalia's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity and supporting its efforts in combating terrorism.
