The Egyptian Customs Authority (ECA) has unveiled a new mobile application, dubbed Telephony (MY Phone), to facilitate the registration of mobile phones imported from abroad.

Telephony app is developed by the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA).

The move comes as the country seeks to implement customs duties of approximately 38.5 percent on imported phones to combat smuggling.

Officials estimate that up to 95 percent of mobile phones entering Egypt are smuggled.

Under the new regulations, imported devices will be registered upon entry into customs ports and linked to network systems.

A grace period of 90 days will be allowed to pay fees, after which the network will be closed.

According to Ahram Arabic gate, phones for personal use less than EGP 15,000 are exempt from fees.
