President El-Sisi restructures Grand Egyptian Museum board of trustees

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued on Saturday a presidential decree restructuring the Grand Egyptian Museum's (GEM) board of trustees, which the president headed, to serve for three years.

The newly appointed GEM board of trustees includes a distinguished array of international and Egyptian figures from various fields of expertise.

The board's international members include UAE's National Security Advisor Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarō Asō, Saudi Space Agency Chairman Prince Sultan bin Salman, and Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Zurab Pololikashvili.

Egyptian members include the ministers of tourism, finance, and culture; Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Mostafa El-Feki; renowned archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass; former minister of culture Dr. Farouk Hosny; Board of Directors Chairman of the National Bank of Egypt Hisham Okasha; businessman Sir Mohamed Lotfy Mansour; TV host Sherif Amer; Executive Director of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV)/United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Ghada Waly.

The decree was published in the official gazette.

The GEM is currently soft-opened, allowing visitors to explore key areas.

These areas include the Hanging Obelisk Plaza, the atrium featuring the colossal statue of King Ramses II, and the awe-inspiring Grand Staircase, which showcases a selection of the finest huge artefacts from ancient Egypt. 

The museum is expected to be officially inaugurated in 2025.
