The Arab League “took the initiative to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the new Syrian administration to arrange Zaki's visit to Damascus at the head of a delegation from the league's general secretariat,” an Arab diplomatic source told Ahram Online.
“They have promised to facilitate this,” the source added.
This visit aims to establish communication with the new authorities that have replaced Bashar al-Assad.
Diplomatic sources suggest that "while the Syrian administration has demonstrated openness towards Arab countries, the Arab League may not currently be a top priority for them."
“They may even view the organization as having been a hindering factor when it reinstated Syria’s seat.”
In an emergency meeting held in Cairo in May 2023, the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers approved Syria's return to its seat in the league. This decision reversed the suspension of Syria’s membership imposed in November 2011 following the outbreak of protests in the country.
Syria’s return to the league paved the way for al-Assad to participate in the Jeddah Summit, marking his first appearance at an Arab summit in 13 years.
In a press statement on Monday, Zaki said that the decision regarding Syria's representation in the League — particularly regarding Ahmed al-Sharaa's appointment to Syria's seat — would be left to member states, not the general secretariat.
