The Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, reiterated Wednesday that Lebanon must elect "a consensus president" who can lead the country through its internal and regional challenges.

According to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry, Abdelatty made these remarks in a phone call with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on the eve of the Lebanese Parliament session to elect a new president.

Abdelatty also emphasized that the parliament must elect a president to fill the ongoing presidential vacuum in Lebanon based on a national consensus that admits no foreign pressures or influences.

Furthermore, he reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to supporting Lebanon during this critical time.

Lebanon has been without a president for more than two years due to deep political divisions, especially between Hezbollah and its rivals.

Army Chief Joseph Aoun, 60, is widely regarded as the leading candidate whose supporters believe he can manage the deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon as part of the ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel.

However, some factions remain reluctant to back Joseph Aoun. Since the end of former Lebanese president Michel Aoun's term in October 2022, the Lebanese parliament, which has convened 13 times, has consistently failed to reach the required consensus on any candidate for the presidency.

For his part, Berri expressed his deep gratitude to Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi for his continuous political and humanitarian support for Lebanon at this critical juncture.
