On 2 November 2024, Egypt’s population recorded 107 million.

Cairo is the most populous governorate in Egypt, with a population of 10.4 million.

It is followed by Giza, with 9.7 million; Sharqia, with 8.1 million; Dakahlia, with 7.2 million; and Beheira, with seven million. Minya (6.5 million), Qalyubia (6.2 million), Sohag (5.9 million), Alexandria (5.6 million), and Gharbia (5.5 million) follow in the list.

Figures in other governorates include Assiut (5.2 million), Monufia (4.8 million), Fayoum (4.2 million), Kafr El-Sheikh (3.8 million), Qena (3.7 million), Beni Suef (3.7 million), Aswan (1.7 million), Damietta (1.6 million), Ismailia (1.5 million), Luxor(1.4 million), Suez (805,300), Port Said (799,400), Marsa Matrouh (576,200), North Sinai (467,400), Red Sea (412,400), New Valley ( 272,200), and South Sinai (117,800).

Despite this increase in population, Egypt’s fertility rate fell from 3.5 children per woman in 2014 to 2.85 in 2021, according to the last family health survey.

Egypt’s population growth rate also declined by 46 percent from 2017 to 2023, according to the Egyptian government in March 2024.

In 2023, the population growth rate declined by 1.4 percent, the lowest in the last 50 years, compared to the 2.6 percent recorded in 2017 in a report issued by the National Project for Egyptian Family Development (NPEFD).

The NPEFD is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to curb runaway population growth.

The government previously announced that it spent over EGP 100 million annually to provide birth control for free or at lowered prices under the NPDEF, providing an annual incentive of EGP 1,000 to married women with no more than two children.

In 2020, it launched the “Etnein Kefaya” (Two Are Enough) campaign, which offered financial assistance to those who succeed in family planning.

Egypt also launched the National Population and Development Strategy (2023-2030) in September 2023 to address the population issue.
