The decree applies to public sector employees across ministries, government institutions, public authorities, local administrations, and public sector companies, as well as workers in the private sector.

However, examinations scheduled for that day in schools and universities will proceed as planned.

The 18-day 2011 revolution, which broke out on 25 January, ousted longtime Hosni Mubarak and ended his 30-year rule.

Before the revolt, 25 January had been an official holiday celebrating Egyptian police for protecting the Egyptian people.

The day marks resistance by Egyptian police to British occupation forces in Ismailia in 1952.
