Yastremska, world's number 38, dominated the match, securing a 6-1, 6-4 victory in just over an hour, ending Sherif’s hopes of advancing in the season's first Grand Slam.

Sherif, 28, who ranks 65th in the world, had withdrawn from last year’s Australian Open due to injury.

In contrast, Tunisia's Ons Jabeur moved into the second round with a commanding performance against Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.

Jabeur, the world number two, claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win, showcasing the form that has made her a leading contender in the tournament.

Jabeur’s victory keeps her on track for a deep run as she aims to build on her strong 2023 campaign, which included reaching two Grand Slam finals.
