According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi and Biden discussed the latest developments in negotiations and the ongoing mediation efforts by Egypt, the United States, and Qatar to reach a ceasefire deal, which would also include the exchange of prisoners and detainees between Hamas and Israel.
Additionally, the Egyptian president stressed the urgent need for a prompt ceasefire to alleviate the severe humanitarian suffering in Gaza, facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, and prevent the conflict from further escalating in the Middle East.
The discussions between the two leaders came just hours after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Washington, Cairo, and Doha had worked together to create a final ceasefire proposal for Gaza.
Most of the deals’ terms were reportedly agreed upon; however, there has not been an official announcement yet.
During their call, El-Sisi and Biden also stressed the importance of strengthening the strategic bilateral relationship between Egypt and the United States across various fields.
Furthermore, President El-Sisi also wished Biden success in his future endeavours as his term will end on 20 January 2025.
From his side, Biden "emphasized that this deal would never have been possible without Egypt’s essential and historic role in the Middle East and commitment to diplomacy for resolving conflicts," in a statement issued by the White House.
