Former Assistant Foreign Minister Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Hegazy
Ambassador Hegazy emphasized that the current relations between Egypt and Syria require a serious, private discussion. In this discussion, both nations can consider the foundations for a new phase, with Syria addressing Cairo's concerns.
Since the fall of Bashar Al-Assad's regime on 8 December, Egypt has consistently urged Syrian parties to prioritize the nation’s supreme interest and unify their objectives and priorities.
Cairo also announced it has no plans currently for the Egyptian foreign minister to visit Damascus to meet with the new leadership, which ousted Al-Assad and now leads Hay'at Tahrir Al-Sham, a rebel faction that split from extremist groups Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
Moreover, Hegazy emphasized that Damascus acknowledges Egypt’s strategic role in the region and historical efforts regarding Syria, especially amid recent changes.
He also highlighted that both countries have the potential to work together to shape a stable future for their historically close relationship.
"Syria must address Egypt's concerns, which requires a unique, serious, and national effort to lay the foundations for the next phase,” Hegazy stated.
Additionally, he confirmed that Egypt's participation in the recent Riyadh meetings aimed to provide Arab and international support to help the new Syrian government address internal and regional challenges.
Hegazy clarified that this involves preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and unity, preventing foreign interference, safeguarding its sovereignty, and establishing an inclusive institutional state through measures leading to a new constitution, parliamentary elections, and the selection of a president.
During the Riyadh meetings, Cairo also emphasized the need to ensure that "Syria does not become a source of regional instability or a haven for terrorist groups," which could pose a threat and provoke any country in the region.
"Egypt is fully aware of the necessity to remain engaged in the current Syrian situation and not be sidelined, ensuring that no regional or international powers monopolize influence in Syria, which requires Cairo's strategic strength,” Hegazy stressed.
The ambassador also noted that Cairo has consistently sought to maintain Syria’s stability, security, and sovereignty over its entire territory.
Egypt has condemned Israeli interventions and violations of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity. It has also urged the international community to support Syria’s sovereignty and unity while providing urgent aid.
Hegazy further emphasized that "Syria has always been a central focus of Egyptian diplomacy," highlighting the deep and long-lasting ties between the two nations.
He added that Cairo will continue to offer all the needed support to safeguard Syria’s security and stability.
He affirmed that Egypt's engagement with the new Syrian government will remain centred on ensuring its security and stability and helping guide it toward a safer future.
In addition, Hegazy noted that Egypt believes future relations with Syria will flourish within a framework of institutional governance that includes all citizens and is based on a constitution that embraces everyone.
