In June 2019, the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) suspended Sudan's participation in all AU activities until a civilian-led Transitional Authority was established to help resolve the country's crisis.

Egypt, which assumed chairmanship of the AU-led PSC in October last year, supports revisiting the council's position on Sudan's suspension.

According to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty travelled to Port Sudan on Wednesday to strengthen Egyptian-Sudanese relations and discuss the latest developments. He welcomed the TSC's decision to accelerate humanitarian aid to Sudan, emphasizing Egypt's complete solidarity with Sudan and support for its stability, security, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Furthermore, Abdelatty highlighted that Egypt supports the Sudanese citizens who sought refuge in Egypt and will ensure their safe return once stability is restored in the country. In return, Al-Burhan expressed gratitude for Egypt's hospitality and care for Sudanese citizens on its soil.

According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Egypt has become the largest host country for Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan. Sudan grapples with one of the world's most significant humanitarian crises, with over 24.6 million people, about half the population, facing acute food insecurity.

On a different note, Al-Burhan praised the successful conduct of the secondary school exams for 28,000 Sudanese students in Egypt.

Similarly, Abdelatty lauded the exams' success and emphasized Egypt's commitment to supporting the Sudanese community in continuing their educational journey.

He also met his Sudanese counterpart Ali Youssef Ahmed, with whom he discussed water security. The two ministers commended the ongoing cooperation and coordination on this critical issue between Egypt and Sudan and recognized its importance in safeguarding the shared existential interests of both nations.
