The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the two sides discussed the latest developments in Gaza in a phone call, highlighting the Egyptian-Qatari-American coordination and intensive efforts over the past 15 months to reach this agreement.
They noted that these efforts, which have culminated in reaching an agreement on a ceasefire and the exchange of prisoners and detainees, save Palestinian lives and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, the call also discussed the central monitoring mechanism in Cairo to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
The Egyptian, Qatari, American, Israeli, and Palestinian participating delegations had agreed to form a joint operations room in Cairo to follow up on the implementation of the agreement, Al-Qahera News TV channel reported Friday.
On Wednesday, Egypt, Qatar, and the US issued a joint statement on the agreement reached between Israel and Hamas for the exchange of prisoners and detainees and the establishment of sustainable calm, leading to a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
Immediately after the announcement of the ceasefire deal, Egyptian sources said coordination was underway to open the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza to allow the entry of international aid to the Palestinian people in the strip.
Syrian developments
The statement continued that both sides addressed the latest developments in Syria during the call. Al-Thani briefed his Egyptian counterpart on the outcomes of his recent visit to Damascus and his meeting with Syrian de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa.
In this regard, Abdelatty and Al-Thani reaffirmed their full support for the Syrian people, stressing the importance of regional and international efforts to restore stability across Syrian territory.
Additionally, the ministry's statement said Egyptian and Qatari FMs emphasized the need for a Syrian-led political process that includes all components of Syrian society and combats terrorism.
They also discussed the distinguished bilateral ties between Egypt and Qatar and explored ways to further develop them by enhancing economic, trade, and investment relations.
