Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty during his meeting with Wim Dhont in Brussels.
Abdelatty's remarks came during a meeting in Brussels with Wim Dhont, the General Manager of Electrical Interconnection Projects at the Belgian company Jan De Nul.
Abdelatty arrived in Belgium on the first leg of a European tour.
According to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty expressed hopes to enhance the company's investments and praised the ongoing cooperation with Jan De Nul in several key projects in Egypt.
In November 2023, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and Jan De Nul signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to export renewable energy to Europe as part of Egypt's efforts to become a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen.
During the meeting in Brussels, Abdelatty also welcomed Jan De Nul's interest in participating in the 3.5-billion-euro electrical interconnection project, known as "GREGY," that would transmit 3,000 MW of renewable energy directly from northern Egypt to Attica in Greece.
Green hydrogen strategy
In his meeting with Dhont, Abdelatty outlined Cairo's focus on green energy transition, highlighting the implementation of a national green hydrogen strategy and Egypt's efforts to create a favourable investment environment in this sector.
In August 2023, Egypt established the National Council for Green Hydrogen to stimulate green investment and launched the National Strategy for Green Hydrogen.
Under the strategy, Egypt aims to generate 42 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2035 and acquire up to 8 percent of the global green hydrogen market by 2040.
In February 2024, Egypt signed seven MoUs with global developers in green hydrogen and renewable energy, with expected investments totalling $41 billion over the next ten years.
During his visit to Brussels, Abdelatty will meet with senior Belgian officials to strengthen cooperation between Egypt and the European Union (EU).
