Egypt FM, NATO chief discuss rising challenges in Middle East

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and NATO chief Mark Rutte discussed Monday in a phone call the rising challenges and threats facing the Middle East, including the situation in Syria, developments in Gaza, tensions in the Red Sea, and instability in the Sahel region of Africa.

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty, who is currently visiting Brussels, informed Rutte about Egypt’s ongoing efforts to support security and stability and its contributions to resolving regional crises.

Abdelatty provided an overview of Egypt’s role in brokering the Gaza ceasefire, facilitating the exchange of captives and prisoners between Hamas and Israel, and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to the strip.

He also shared Egypt's stance on the developments in Syria, reaffirming Cairo’s solidarity with the Syrian people, respect for Syria’s territorial integrity, and support for its national institutions.

Egypt’s top diplomat praised NATO's efforts in launching the Southern Neighbourhood Action Plan, endorsed at the Washington Summit in July 2024. The plan aims for a stronger, more strategic, and result-oriented approach to the region.

Moreover, Abdelatty emphasized the importance of NATO strengthening its relationships with Southern Neighbourhood countries to tackle regional challenges and threats effectively.

The Egyptian foreign minister also appreciated the efforts of NATO’s special representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, who visited Egypt in September 2024.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with NATO in capacity building, knowledge transfer, and combating terrorism and cybersecurity.
