Cairo giants Zamalek are gearing up to face Modern Sport FC in the 9th matchday of the Egyptian Premier League at the Cairo International Stadium on Thursday, with the White Knights having a golden opportunity to clinch the league summit.

Zamalek

Zamalek currently sit third in the standings with 17 points from 8 games, three points behind leaders Pyramids FC, who climbed to the top of the table after a 1-0 win over ZED FC, and two points adrift of defending champions Ahly, who were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Pharco FC on Wednesday.

The buoyant Cairo-based side enter the game after securing a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals, with the defending champions maintaining a 6-game unbeaten streak.

Zamalek enter the game following a hard-fought 3-2 win over Haras El-Hedoud in the previous round of the league last Thursday, thanks to Ahmed 'Zizo' Sayed's brace.

Zamalek have been in fine attacking form this season, netting 17 goals while conceding eight.

However, Swiss coach Christian Gross faces a selection headache as injuries threaten to disrupt his plans.

Influential midfielder Abdallah El-Said and defending duo Mostafa El-Zenary and Mahmoud ‘El-Wensh’ Hamdi are facing an anxious wait to determine their availability for the game since they are suffering from muscular injuries.

In addition, trio Nasser Maher, Mohamed El-Sayed and Ahmed Hamdi are still nursing their injuries.

Moreover, winger Mostafa Shalaby is also doubtful for the game with flu.

On the other hand, Modern Sport FC will be aiming for a surprise win to resurrect their season, since they are struggling at the bottom of the table, with just four points from eight matches, and they have yet to secure a win this season, managing only four draws and four losses.
