The Tunisian international sustained the injury during Thursday’s Egyptian Premier League match against Modern Sport, which Zamalek lost 1-0. Mathlouthi was substituted in the game's closing minutes, with veteran Mahmoud Abdel-Razek ‘Shikabala’ taking his place.

"The scans confirmed that Mathlouthi has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee," Zamalek’s team doctor Mohamed Osama told the club’s media centre.

"Arrangements are being made for him to travel overseas to undergo the required surgery," he added.

Jonathan Ngwem scored the match’s only goal for Modern Sport after a well-executed exchange with teammate Ali Zazaa. The win was Modern Sport’s first of the season, breaking an eight-match winless streak.

The result leaves Zamalek under pressure as they continue to struggle in the league, while Modern Sport’s victory ensures that all teams in this year’s competition have now recorded at least one win.

Mathlouthi’s absence will be a significant blow for Zamalek, who will now be without one of their key defenders for an extended period.
