The Premier League champions finalized the signing of the 25-year-old from German side Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday, securing him on a four-and-a-half-year deal for a reported fee of £59 million.
Marmoush has been a standout performer in the Bundesliga, showcasing his versatility by excelling in any position across the front three. His arrival addresses a pressing need for Manchester City, who have struggled this season.
When asked about the reasoning behind the signing, Guardiola was unequivocal.
“The reason was his potential,” the Manchester City boss said during Friday’s pre-match press conference.
“Last season, we didn’t make many signings because of the exceptional quality of the team. We anticipated doing more business in the summer, but injuries and other issues forced us to act now. Marmoush adds exceptional quality to the team. The club believes he has the potential to be a future star for many years, with incredible quality in the final third. That’s why we moved for him,” Guardiola explained.
The Spanish tactician expressed confidence in Marmoush’s ability to adapt quickly to his new surroundings.
“With Omar, I think he will adapt quickly,” Guardiola said.
He also confirmed that the Egyptian forward will be available for Saturday’s match against Chelsea despite limited training time with the squad.
“We haven’t trained much because of travel. Omar had his first session yesterday, and the others trained a bit, but not all together as a team,” Guardiola added.
Manchester City currently sit fifth in the Premier League table after a string of disappointing results, while Chelsea are two points ahead in fourth.
Marmoush arrives in England in scintillating form, having netted 20 goals and provided 14 assists in 26 matches across all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt this season.
During his time in Germany, he made 108 Bundesliga appearances, scoring 35 goals and 22 assists.
In his debut season with Frankfurt, Marmoush enjoyed an impressive campaign. He scored 17 goals in 41 appearances and helped the club secure a sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga and a Europa League qualification spot.
Marmoush has also made his mark on the international stage, earning 35 caps and scoring six goals since his debut for Egypt in 2021. He has established himself as a key figure for the Pharaohs, further solidifying his reputation as one of Africa’s most promising talents.
