Zamalek SC defender Hamza Mathlouthi underwent a successful surgery in Germany to repair an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, the Cairo giants announced Wednesday.

The Tunisian international was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee on 24 January.

The 32-year-old player sustained the injury a day earlier in the closing minutes of the Egyptian Premiere League match against Modern Sport FC, which Zamalek lost 1-0.

"Mathlouthi underwent a successful ACL surgery in Germany and is in good condition," said Mohamed Osama, Zamalek’s team doctor.

"He’s set to start his rehabilitation programme in the coming period,” the doctor added.

Mathlouthi’s absence is a blow for the White Knights, who will be without one of their key defenders for an extended period.

Mathlouthi, who joined Zamalek in 2020 from Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien, has scored five goals in 152 competitions since his arrival.

He also made 13 appearances on different fronts this season before being injured.

Zamalek SC are currently third in the Egyptian League table with 20 points in 11 games, four points behind leaders Pyramids FC.
