Syria’s interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa said in remarks broadcast on Tuesday that he believes US President Donald Trump’s plan to resettle Palestinians from Gaza and take over the strip “is a serious crime that will ultimately fail.”

In an interview with a UK podcast, "The Rest is Politics", hosted by Alastair Campbell, a former spokesman for British leader Tony Blair, and Rory Stewart, an ex-Conservative minister, Al-Sharaa said: "I believe that no power can drive people from their land. Many countries have tried to do it, and they all failed, especially during the recent war in Gaza over the past year and a half."

Trump had proposed a colonialist-style plan for the US to take over the war-ravaged Gaza, deport the native Palestinian population to Egypt, Jordan, and other Arab and Muslim countries, and turn the strip into a Middle Eastern Riviera.

Egypt, Jordan, and the Arab League have firmly rejected any attempt to displace the Palestinians from their homeland.

"The Palestinian people endured pain, killing, and destruction, yet they refused to leave their land, and over 80 years of this conflict, all attempts to displace them have failed. Those who left in the past have regretted their decision, so there is a Palestinian lesson that every generation has learned: the importance of holding onto their land,” Al-Sharaa added.

"In my view, it would be neither wise nor morally or politically right for Trump to lead an effort to force Palestinians out of their land," he noted.

"Why is he pushing Mexicans out of America now? He is doing the same thing. I believe this is a serious crime that will ultimately fail," Al-Sharaa concluded.
