Zamalek has made a significant managerial change by unveiling the signing of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro to take over from Swiss manager Christian Gross, just a week before the Cairo grand derby against Ahly.

Peseiro, the seasoned 64-year-old tactician, arrived in Cairo on Thursday to finalize a one-and-a-half-year contract as Zamalek’s new head coach.

No financial details were announced but Peseiro will reportedly earn $70,000 per month during the first six months.

This marks the second change of the season as Gross himself replaced another Portuguese, Jose Gomes, who left the team in November heading to Saudi Arabia.

Peseiro is set to assume his new role immediately as Zamalek prepares to face Petrojet on Sunday, the 14th matchday of the Egyptian league.

The team's lacklustre performance influenced the decision to part ways with Gross only two months into his second term with the White Knights, with eight wins, three losses, and two draws in 13 matches in the Egyptian Premier League.

Gross, 72, leaves Zamalek positioned third in the Egyptian League table with 26 points, trailing leaders Pyramids FC by four points and archrivals Ahly by three points.

In his first tenure with the White Knights, Gross led Zamalek to the CAF Confederation Cup title during the 2018/19 season.

However, his tenure with the White Knights ended following disagreements and failed contract negotiations with the club's management.

Switching sides

Peseiro briefly managed Ahly during the 2015-16 season but quickly departed upon receiving an enticing offer from Porto.

He brings a wealth of experience from his various stints with big names, including Porto and Sporting Braga in Portugal, Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, Panathinaikos in Greece, and UAE's Al-Wehda.

Peseiro's notable achievements include guiding Sporting to the Europa League final 2005.

He has also an experience on the international level as he managed Saudi Arabia and Venezuela and guided Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
