Israel to withdraw from Lebanon 'within timeline': Israeli security official

The Israeli military is prepared to withdraw from Lebanese territory and hand over areas to the Lebanese army "within the timeline" set by a US-French-mediated ceasefire agreement, a senior Israeli security official said.

Under the ceasefire, Lebanon's military was to deploy in the south alongside United Nations peacekeepers as the Israeli army withdrew over a 60-day period.

The deadline was later extended to 18 February after Israeli forces failed to withdraw from occupied Lebanese territory.

Hezbollah was also expected to vacate its positions in the south, near the Israeli border, during that timeframe.

The Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed on Thursday: "We (Tel Aviv) are working closely with the US to make sure that handing over responsibility to the Lebanese army will happen within the timeline."

His comments came as Israeli fighter jets overnight targeted sites near the Lebanese town of Yater. Warplanes were also seen flying over southern Lebanese villages and towns. No immediate casualties were reported.

Lebanon's parliamentary speaker, Nabih Berri, said on Thursday that the United States had informed him that while Israel would withdraw on 18 February, "it will remain in five locations."

Lebanon rejected this, demanding Tel Aviv abide by the ceasefire with Hezbollah, which Israel has violated by refusing to fully withdraw since 27 November.
