EGYPES 2025, taking place from 17 to 19 February in Cairo, explores how Egypt, positioned at the crossroads of Africa and the Mediterranean, is leading the way in sustainable energy transformation.
The conference, held in cooperation with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, is themed "Building a Secure and Sustainable Energy Future."
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides is attending the event.
Over 47,000 attendees, 2,500 conference delegates, 500 exhibiting companies, 300 global speakers, and 10 country pavilions are participating in the conference.
Egyptian-Cypriot relations
According to an Egyptian presidency statement, President El-Sisi held several bilateral meetings with heads of state and officials participating in the event, including a meeting with his Cypriot counterpart.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to boost bilateral cooperation in various fields, including energy, both bilaterally and within the framework of the trilateral cooperation mechanism with Greece.
The Egyptian presidency stated that the meeting addressed methods of enhancing cooperation in natural gas production, liquefaction, and transportation, aiming to benefit both nations and the broader European continent,
The Egyptian and Cypriot leaders also praised the momentum in their countries’ relations, reaffirming their commitment to continuing coordination in various areas to fulfil their people's aspirations.
Egypt's contributions to Africa
In a subsequent meeting with his Equatoguinean counterpart, Obiang Nguema, El-Sisi emphasized Egypt’s commitment to supporting African nations and declared readiness to assist development efforts in Equatorial Guinea.
Both leaders addressed ways to achieve peace, security, and stability in Africa, reiterating their commitment to unified action to protect Africa’s interests in international fora, read the Egyptian presidency statement.
They also explored mechanisms for strengthening collaboration within the African Union (AU) and revitalizing its various programmes to foster joint African action.
Additionally, both leaders affirmed the need to enhance bilateral ties and explore broader prospects of Egyptian-Equatoguinean cooperation across sectors.
Eni's future projects in Egypt
El-Sisi also met with Claudio Descalzi, the CEO of Italian energy company Eni. The Egyptian president stressed the importance of expanding the company’s research, exploration, and production activities in the country.
President El-Sisi also expressed Egypt’s keenness to bolster cooperation with Eni and optimize the state’s natural resources and the gas and energy sector.
Descalzi assessed the results of the company’s recent projects in Egypt and its ongoing and upcoming gas exploration and production plans in the country.
He emphasized Eni’s strong commitment to its strategic relationship with Egypt, highlighting its pivotal position as a regional hub for energy trading and liquefied gas production. He also explained Egypt's promising opportunities and substantial potential in this area.
Apache's potential expansion in Egypt
El-Sisi also met with John J. Christmann, CEO of Apache Corporation, an American company specializing in the search and exploration of petroleum.
In the meeting, El-Sisi was briefed on Apache’s potential expansion plans in Egypt, valuing the size and scope of the company’s activities and investments in the country and its significant contributions to gas and petroleum exploration and production operations.
The president underscored the importance of enhancing the corporation’s activities and investments in the country to maximize the utilization of its resources. He also expressed his anticipation of transforming Egypt into a vital hub for energy production and trade in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Christmann stressed the significance of the company’s collaborative efforts with Egypt as part of Apache’s international programmes.
Furthermore, he praised Egypt’s recent economic growth achievements, which were reflected in the ongoing development in energy production and diversification of its sources.
Christmann also highlighted the progress in Egypt’s infrastructure, particularly the oil and gas sector, and its expansion in regional cooperation projects, including transporting and liquefying gas, noting the positive economic impact of such projects.
