Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides have stressed that establishing a Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is the only way to achieve lasting peace in the region.

El-Sisi met with Christodoulides on the sidelines of the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2025), which kicked off in Cairo earlier Monday.

The Egyptian president briefed Christodoulides on Cairo's efforts to resume the exchange of captives and detainees and to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the heavily devastated strip, which faces a growing humanitarian crisis.

He also stressed the country's unwavering commitment to implementing all three phases of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza to promote regional stability.

Christodoulides was also briefed on Egypt's efforts to “develop a comprehensive proposal for rebuilding Gaza, one that ensures that Palestinians are not displaced and do not leave their land,” read the statement.

Egypt, alongside Qatar and the United States, has played a key role in brokering the Gaza ceasefire deal, which took effect on 19 January.

Since then, 19 Israeli captives have been released in exchange for over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. Negotiations on the second phase of the ceasefire are expected to start this week.

Cairo's emergency Arab summit, initially slated for 27 February to respond to US President Donald Trump's displacement proposal, will be postponed due to “logistic reasons,” Hossam Zaki, assistant secretary-general of the League of Arab States (AL), told the media on Sunday.

The summit, Zaki added, aims to formulate a strong and unified Arab stance on the Palestinian cause, particularly in response to the latest displacement proposal.

El-Sisi and his Cypriot counterpart also discussed the situations in Syria, Lebanon, and Libya. Both presidents emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in these countries to bolster regional and international peace and security.
