Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat received the award at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 ceremony in Barcelona, which concludes on Thursday.
Notable figures attended the awards ceremony, including Ookla President and CEO Stephen Bye, several company executives, and Mohamed Nasr, managing director and CEO of Telecom Egypt.
During the ceremony, Talaat underscored the critical role of effective telecommunications and internet services in Egypt's digital strategy, serving as a cornerstone for the nation’s digital economy.
He reaffirmed the Egyptian government's commitment to enhancing the digital infrastructure across the country to elevate the quality of internet and telecommunications services available to citizens.
Furthermore, Talaat revealed that a significant project is underway to replace copper cables with fibre optic networks in rural Egypt's Haya Karima villages.
This initiative aims to provide high-speed internet access to approximately 60 million individuals across around 4,500 villages.
He highlighted that investments totalling $3.5 billion in digital infrastructure have resulted in a remarkable increase in average fixed internet speeds, surging from 5.4 Mbps in December 2017 to 80.3 Mbps in January 2025.
This achievement has positioned Egypt as a frontrunner in fixed internet speed across Africa for over three consecutive years.
Following the ceremony, Talaat engaged in productive discussions with leaders from prominent global telecommunications and technology firms.
He met with Hiko Meyer, executive vice president of cloud services provider HPE, to explore avenues for collaboration in artificial intelligence, support for startups, and the development of digital capabilities.
They also discussed potential research and development partnerships between HPE, the Applied Innovation Centre, and Egypt University for Informatics.
Additionally, the minister met with Roni Vashisht, executive vice president of giant tech company NVIDIA, and they deliberated on possible collaborations in capacity building for artificial intelligence training initiatives.
As part of his participation in MWC 2025, Talaat also met with various international representatives to strengthen cooperation in the telecommunications and technology sectors, further reinforcing Egypt's status as a pivotal player in the global digital arena.
This recognition and the ongoing initiatives underscore Egypt's dedication to enhancing its digital infrastructure and providing top-tier internet services, paving the way for a more interconnected and technologically advanced future.
