Abdelatty’s remarks came during a meeting with the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa Annette Weber to enhance consultation and coordination between Egypt and the EU.
During the meeting, the Egyptian FM reiterated Cairo’s commitment to peaceful solutions and resolving regional conflicts through dialogue and cooperation, according to the Egyptian foreign ministry.
He further stressed the need for intensified regional and international efforts to tackle security challenges in the region, including combating terrorism and extremism.
Additionally, Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s contributions to stability in the Horn of Africa, particularly its diplomatic mediation efforts to resolve regional disputes.
He emphasized that Egypt prioritizes enhancing its regional relations, recognizing their significance in ensuring regional and continental security.
Regarding Sudan, the Egyptian FM reaffirmed the importance of fully respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity while preserving its state institutions and resources.
He emphasised Egypt’s support for regional and international initiatives to end the conflict and achieve a comprehensive political resolution in Sudan.
Abdelatty also highlighted Cairo’s extensive efforts to coordinate with international partners and Sudanese political forces to facilitate conflict resolution, achieve a ceasefire, and ensure humanitarian aid reaches the Sudanese people.
Addressing the situation in Somalia, the Egyptian FM underscored the importance of supporting Somalia’s stability and respecting its sovereignty and territorial unity, reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to assisting Somali state institutions.
Furthermore, Abdelatty noted that the escalating security challenges in the Red Sea require strengthened regional cooperation among coastal states to safeguard international maritime routes.
He emphasized that securing the Red Sea and ensuring the free flow of international navigation is a strategic priority for Egypt, as any threat to the Red Sea security directly impacts the global economy, particularly amid the increasing challenges in the region.
For her part, the EU official expressed appreciation for Egypt’s active role within Africa, acknowledging the EU’s strong interest in the security of the Red Sea and the stability of the Horn of Africa.
She also highlighted the EU’s eagerness to enhance cooperation with Egypt as part of international efforts to stabilize the region, recognizing Egypt’s pivotal role as a cornerstone of regional security and stability.
