This came during the top diplomat’s meeting with Hanna Tetteh, the newly appointed United Nations secretary-general's special representative for Libya.

Abdelatty affirmed to the UN envoy that Egypt would continue to support Libyan parties in reaching a consensus to solve the country’s political crisis.

He also emphasized the importance of strengthening state institutions and holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated.

All foreign forces, fighters, and mercenaries need to withdraw from Libya within a set timeline to safeguard Libya’s unity, territorial integrity, and stability, Abdelatty stressed.

The statement added that FM Abdelatty congratulated the new UN envoy on her appointment and expressed Egypt's eagerness to strengthen cooperation with her.

He further emphasized Egypt's commitment to supporting the UN envoy's mission to help achieve a sustainable resolution to the Libyan crisis under relevant international resolutions and guidelines.

The oil-rich country has been struggling to recover from the chaos that followed the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi.

Still, the country remains divided between a UN-recognized government in Tripoli and a rival authority in the east.

Presidential and parliamentary elections, slated for December 2021, were indefinitely postponed due to disputes between rival factions.

Tetteh, a Ghanaian former parliamentarian and minister, has been appointed special representative for Libya and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) since January 2025.

She succeeded Abdoulaye Bathily, who served in the role until May 2024.
